Observations:
The passage starts by stating that if we have received any comfort or encouragement from Christ or the Spirit then we should be like-minded, being one in the spirit with the same purpose. Then it tells us how we do that in vs 3-4 –
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but to the interests of others.”
And the passage goes on to say that we should have the same attitude as Christ, who although God, humbled himself to be a servant and die on the cross.
Application:
I struggle with selfish ambition and pride. When I think about it, I don’t think I am better than anyone else. But, often my actions speak louder than my thoughts. I would like to have the attitude of Christ and follow his example. He had every right to be prideful. He is God and is better than everyone else. But, He choose to humble Himself out of service for us. If He hadn’t we would be lost forever.
Choice. I have to choose to be humble. Just talking about it or hoping it will happen, will not do it. I need to choose to be humble and servant-like, thinking of others before myself. And I can’t wait until I am in the moment. It has to start with an attitude that then reflects itself when I am interacting with others. I have to choose to be a servant now.
Prayer:
God, I ask that you change my heart to that of a servant. I ask that you please help me to choose humility right now. Please take any controlling or prideful feelings or ideas away from me. I don’t want them near me. But, I feel them encroaching in. I am nothing. You are everything. And you choose to humble yourself for me. Let me choose to humble myself for you and for others.
