Israel Day 5A

Today was a big day. We started with Jack’s bar mitzah at the Wall. The men and women are separated. So, the women stood on plastic chairs to look over the divider. Jack read out of a Torah kept in wood cabinets along the Wall. My Dad was given the honor of carrying the Torah to the table. It took about 1.5 hours, and I’m not sure what all happened on the men’s side. You can look at the pictures. There are way too many.

After the ceremony we went to a restaurant called, Between the Arches. It’s literally in the walls of the old city. Really neat. We rented out the whole place for the party. Moving speeches were given, food was served, and great musicians played while men and women danced in their own separate groups.

Another family was with us. They are victims of terror here in Israel. They live in an area that is constantly bombed, but maintain their houses to hold up the Jewish nation against the Arabs in that particular area. The boy is 12, and so celebrated his bar mitzvah a little early. This will be the only one he’ll get to have. The family has no money and lives in constant fear. It’s a custom to share your bar mitzvah with someone in need, like this.

In the afternoon, we went to Hezekiah’s Tunnels. Truly amazing. King Hezekiah wanted to bring water into the city walls. He had two groups start on either end, and how they actually met in the middle is no less than a miracle. We walked through the entire thing. In addition we walked over a mile up a steep hill. They continue to excavate in this area, and learn more all the time that confirms what it says in the Bible.
