“I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want, I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” v12-13
Observation:
Right before this passage, Paul says that he knows what it is to be in need and what it’s like to have plenty. Then he moves to this verse as how to deal with each. Interesting, this implies there is hardship to both being in need and having plenty. And the only way to be content in either, to really experience peace, is to rely on God’s strength and not our own.
Application:
There are areas of life where I have plenty. I have been blessed with a good job, enough money, supportive family, etc. And there are areas of my life that I am in need - my desire to find a spouse, unsaved family members, etc. In all of those circumstances, the only way for me to find true peace and contentment is to rely on God’s strength - to let him be in charge. If I follow his lead and not rely on my own strength, I will find contentment that transcends my current situation.
Prayer:
God, forgive me for relying on my own strength for both the areas of plenty and of need in my life. Forgive me for leading myself and for my need to be in control. Please help me to rely fully on you - your strength, your will, your lead. I know that is the only way to true peace and contentment. To the extent that I take over, that is how discontent I will be. Circumstances don’t matter. Whatever happens to me, please help me to give it over to you, trusting that you will handle whatever it is. More of you, less of me. Thanks Lord. Amen.
